Danae Revisited

Measuring approx. 24×24 inches and printed on warm cream gallery stock, this print was commissioned by Queens Of The Stone Age for their show in Boston, Mass. in Dec. 2013.

The theme of the imagery (which will be released as a very limited art print, very soon) is influenced by the work of Viennese artist Gustav Klimt, and his striking piece ‘Danae’ (1907). A subject of Greek myth, Danae often personified divine love and transcendence.

Jermaine says:
“The piece ‘Danae’ is one of my favorite Klimt works. I’ve voyeuristically stared at her for hours, while she sleeps her eternal sleep. Klimt depicts her in peaceful repose, majestic and radiant. And yet, she is still somehow vulnerable. She is untouchable, but somehow attainable. I decided to revisit Danae as a theme. Here, she is lost in a post-modern, exhausted slumber. She is reincarnated, awash in hypnagogic dream trance, and stagnating in the disposable, plastic world of the now. There is no majesty: only regret and a fleeting illusion of comfort. It seemed to fit with the overwhelming theme of time lost and stinging regret in the latest Queens Of The Stone Age album. Don’t ask for whom the bell tolls…”

From a signed and numbered edition of only 35 pieces.

Queens of the Stone Age – Antwerp 2013

On Nov. 25, 2013, Queens Of The Stone Age played their largest headline show to date in Antwerp, Belgium. Jermaine Rogers was commissioned by the band to create the limited edition print for this show.

Measuring approx. 29×21 inches, this piece is printed on gallery white stock. It is from a signed and numbered edition of only 75 pieces.

Since the image debuted online, several folks have sent emails and messages to Jermaine inquiring about the artistic depiction of the bands frontman, Josh Homme.

Regarding the imagery, Jermaine says:
‘Yes, there is some significance intended in the various aspects of the image. The fence, the balloon, and even Josh’s skeleton hands, they are all included for a reason. There is no ‘filler’ here: visually, I wanted to say what I did in the most straightforward, simplistic way I could. The print felt good. But I’d rather people come up with their own interpretations. Let the thing say what it means to you. What I was thinking is academic, and I’ll even admit that it would be instructive to some folks. But what it means to you is what’s more important. I will say that the art was inspired by the QOTSA song, ‘The Vampyre Of Time & Memory’. That song is simultaneously about helplessness and absolute control…at least to me. Things spiraling away from your grasp…but the firm acceptance of the whole thing. It’s a beautiful sadness.’

Editions:

Stars Variant – In addition to this regular edition, the VARIANT ‘Stars’ edition sports a lovely twilight fade in the background, revealing a starry sky. This variant edition is limited to only 50 signed and numbered pieces.

GOLD ‘REGULAR’ FOIL – This is the REGULAR version of this piece, printed on GOLD MATTE FOIL stock. Approx. 29×21 inches from a signed and numbered edition of only 20 pieces.

MINI ART PRINT – Mini screen print edition on white gallery stock. Measures approx. 9.5 x 7 inches. Signed by Jermaine Rogers.

She

This print measures a nice-sized 29×20 inches and sports 6 colors, including a gradient fade, rich and earthy solids, and a soft metallic gold. Printed on warm cream stock, from a very limited edition of only 40 signed and numbered pieces.

About the imagery, Jermaine says:
‘I think it’s probably one of the biggest swindles ever foisted on society…this default idea of ‘male-dominated’ gender roles. This supposedly basic understanding that man is wiser, stronger, smarter, better, and ‘appointed’ by nature to lead the species into the unknown future. As children, the world is designed to pump this idea into our little brains…wet clay, of sorts, that they mold and twist into little machines, ready to (sometimes unknowingly) push the ‘status quo’ into the next generation. Women who choose to march and fight for ‘equal rights’ are still perceived in some areas as ‘radical’. We used to be a species of ‘Goddess’ worshipers. Everywhere. Every civilization. We equated some of the most powerful aspects of universal nature with the feminine. And this was balanced by the potent strength and cosmic virility of the masculine. Somewhere along the line, we got sold the current bill of goods. ‘Gender roles’. Well, the ladies depicted on this print don’t acknowledge those.’

Editions:

GOLD MATTE FOIL – Printed on GOLD MATTE FOIL stock, from a very limited edition of only 20 signed and numbered pieces.

Pearl Jam – Charlottesville 2013

Jermaine was commissioned by the band Pearl Jam to create a print for their recent show in Charlottesville, VA. This is a 24×18 inch print, a 6-color screen print on white stock.

For posters on this tour, Pearl Jam asked artists to write down their motivation behind the artwork they created for their poster, and then these words were printed on the back of the print. So, this poster is 2-sided: the front contains the actual poster art, and the back contains an explanation from Jermaine (both front and back of print are pictured in the image).

Signed and numbered by Jermaine Rogers, from an edition of only 100.

Avett Brothers – Cleveland 2013

This 24×18 piece is screen printed on white cream gallery stock, from a signed and numbered edition of 175 pieces. The majority of these were made available at the actual show in Cleveland, OH.

About the imagery, Jermaine says:
‘I wanted to touch on the dark themes that seem to run undercurrent in much of the Avett Brothers’ music. Everyone hears the beauty, but the darkness and unsteadiness and doubt are there. I wanted to touch on that and attempt to illustrate it and lay it bare, at least my personal interpretation. The lyric I included in the image are from the song, ‘Head Full Of Doubt/ Road Full Of Promise’. The words are indicative of a darker reality that seems to run undercurrent in much of the bands music. It’s my favorite lyric of theirs.’

Editions:

This 29×23 inch piece is screen printed on gallery cream stock. This piece sold out quickly at the show: a limited number of artist proofs remain available.

About the imagery, Jermaine says:

‘I formulated this image around lyrics from the QOTSA song ‘Fairweather Friends’, as I have firsthand experience with these types: I’m sure many of you have danced a few rounds with them, too. You know, It’s a rare thing in this life to find the human being who shoots straight and really sticks around for the duration, through plenty and lean. A lot of folks leave nothing behind but bad memories and the proverbial ‘knife’ in your back. Funny enough, if you can get your head right, you learn to take pride in those scars. They make you tougher…and wiser. You grab ahold of those truly ‘real’ things in your life, grip them close, and just keep moving on down that road.’
